The Mercedes-Benz Championships are a proud and long-standing tradition, wherein dealerships across the nation participate in a series of amateur golf tournaments to encourage community and raise money for charity. It’s an event we look forward to every year here at Mercedes-Benz of Sacramento, and this year is no different. So for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Championships, we’re pledging our support to JDRF, a global charity dedicated to type 1 diabetes research. Read on to learn more about this cause and how it helps the world.

What is JDRF?

Type 1 diabetes is an awful disease that affects all kinds of people, from children to adults, regardless of their diet or lifestyle. It’s an autoimmune disease that causes your pancreas to stop producing insulin—a hormone that’s essential to your body’s ability to extract energy from food. Fortunately, with vigilant blood sugar management and regular doses of insulin, type 1 diabetes is treatable; unfortunately, there is no known cure. While a diagnosis is no longer a death sentence, it does entail a lifetime of watching your blood sugar, as well as an increased risk for life-threatening complications like kidney failure.

JDRF is dedicated to creating a world where this disease is eradicated, where our children and our children’s children can live without fear of this difficult illness. They’re currently the global leader in funding type 1 diabetes research, as well as tireless advocates for increased government involvement in new research and possible treatments.
